As someone who isn’t a frequent traveler, I admit that I haven’t been to many bookstores outside of my home state of Michigan. However, there are quite a few bookstores that I HAVE been to that have made me immediately fall in love and I have seen photos of many (many many) that I would love to visit someday. It’s hard to compile all of the bookstores I want to visit in the world, but let’s give it a go, shall we?
First, let’s start with my favorite bookstores I HAVE been able to visit:
Literati Bookstore, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Schuler Bookstore, Okemos, Michigan
Trident Bookstore, Boston, Massachusetts
Books & Mortar, Grand Rapids, Michigan
The Dial Bookshop, Chicago, Illinois
Brattle Book Shop, Boston, Massachusetts
Harvard Bookstore, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Now for the bookstores that are on my bucket list!
Shakespeare & Company, Paris, France
Powell’s Books, Portland, Oregon
Strand Bookstore, New York City, New York
Books Are Magic, Brooklyn, New York
Parnassus Books, Nashville, Tennessee
The Last Bookstore, Los Angeles, California
Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe, Washington, D.C.
Hatchards, London, England
City Lights Books, San Francisco, California
Book and Bed, Tokyo, Japan
El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Cărturești Carusel, Bucharest, Romania
Leakey’s Bookshop, Inverness, Scotland
Seems like I have quite a bit of traveling to do once COVID is under control! I can’t believe how many gorgeous bookstores there are in the world that I want to visit. Like Neil Gaiman says, “What I say is, a town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it’s got a bookstore, it knows it’s not foolin’ a soul.”
What is your favorite bookstore you have visited? What bookstores are on your bucket list? 🙂
